  Hiroshi Maruyama

Vice Minister for International Affairs of Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure and Transport, Japan


Before being appointed as the Vice Minister for International Affairs in the Ministry of Land, Transport, and Infrastructure (MLIT) in August of this year, Mr. Maruyama has held many positions since joining the Ministry of Transport in 1972. He worked as the First Secretary and later as the Counsellor for the Embassy of Japan in France from 1986-1989. He worked in such positions as Director of the Financial Affairs Division of the Railway Bureau, Director of the Aviation Industries Division of the Civil Aviation Bureau and Director of the General Affairs Division of the Road Transport Bureau.
Mr. Maruyama held the positions of Director General of the Administration Department of the Civil Aviation Bureau and Vice Director General of the Policy Bureau. Mr. Maruyama was promoted to be the Director General of Policy Planning in 2001. Following this promotion he served as Director General of the Road Transport Bureau, Director General of the Railway Bureau, and Director General of the Policy Bureau.
At the current position as the Vice Minister for International Affairs, Mr. Maruyama is arranging the Ministerial Conference on International Transport Security, which will be held in January in order to lead discussions concerning transport security measures which include development of new technologies capable of detecting explosives and suspicious persons.

Mr. Maruyama earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of Tokyo.
