  Koichi Fujiwara

Deputy Director-General for Engineering Affairs
Maritime Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

Mr. Fujiwara was appointed present position in July 2003. He joined the Ministry of Transport in 1975 and has been serving as an official of the Japanese Government for more than 30 years. In particular he has been playing an important role in the field of shipbuilding industry policy at the Ministry of Transport, and, from 1990 to 1993, as a Director of Japan Ship Centre in London, he showed his excellence as a spokesman of Japanese shipbuilding policy.

He was the head of the Japanese delegation to the fiftieth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, where he actively played a leading role to build consensus in the discussion on amendment of annex I of MARPOL. He will be also the head of the Japanese delegation to the eightieth session of the Maritime Safety Committee this May.

Mr. Fujiwara received his Master’s degree in engineering faculty at the University of Tokyo in 1975.
